Default Further Cultural Decline

For those of you in North America who have had access to, and enjoyment of, classical music on high-definition cable TV and/or HD on-line, there just has been a channel revision that marks further evidence of cultural decline in this part of the world. Music Choice has approximately four dozen music channels. The vast majority of them are pop, rock, country-western, etc. There used to be only three classical channels, one of which was opera.

Apparently, the opera channel permanently has been removed. Music Choice's announcement mentioned a few channels eliminated because of small viewership. I sent them an email inquiry that included the statement, "Millions of people eat at McDonald's and Taco Bell, but that does NOT mean that we should eliminate better quality food from our diets!" I asked them to reply; however, I doubt that they will do so.

I can survive without the Opera Channel, but I will miss it. I not infrequently heard recordings with which I was less familiar, and occasionally the posted informational comments were useful.

Some time ago, one of their postings was incorrect, and I had the temerity to email them a correction. Their posting read, "The highest male voice is countertenor." Included in my statement to them, I explained, "In addition to countertenors such as Andreas Scholl and natural male altos such as Russell Oberlin, there are a few sopranists such as Aris Christofellis and also some rare natural male sopranos such as Radu Marian." Their countertenor posting was removed; however, they never posted the correct information.

A generation ago, America had many classical radio stations. Now there are hardly any. A few have been saved by universities assuming responsibility for them when private companies sold their frequencies to pop, rock, and Spanish stations. Europe, however, still has many fine classical stations. Oh well!
