Tolomeo (Ptolemy VIII) disputes the thrown with his brother Alexander. In exile in Cyprus, he disguises himself as a shepherd. His wife Seleuce, disguised as a shepherdess, seeks him. Ptolemy sinks into despair and attempts suicide before events finally brighten and husband and wife are reunited.
